Overview

Mobile developers build apps for iOS and/or Android — either native (Swift/SwiftUI for iOS, Kotlin/Jetpack Compose for Android) or cross-platform (Flutter/Dart or React Native/JavaScript). Day-to-day you build screens and navigation, manage app state, integrate APIs and device features (camera, location, push), handle offline storage, and ship to the App Store / Play Store.

Suits: people who love mobile products, care about UX and performance on constrained devices, and want the tangible reward of publishing an app people install.

Job market demand (2024–2025)

  • Demand: Solid niche, growing (industry projections cite ~21% growth for mobile app developers over the decade). React Native has the most job postings (~6,400 on LinkedIn US vs ~1,068 for Flutter in a 2025 snapshot); Flutter is the fastest-growing; native iOS/Android pays at the top.
  • Entry salary (US): around $80k for junior React Native/Flutter; iOS (Swift) tends to pay highest among mobile, ~$120k average overall.
  • Remote: Medium — more remote than average but fewer total roles than web; cross-platform skills widen your options.
  • Caveat: mobile is a smaller market than web; pick one stack (cross-platform recommended for breadth) and ship real apps.

Choose this if…

  • You're passionate about mobile apps and want to publish to stores.
  • You enjoy polished UX and working within device constraints.
  • You already know JavaScript/React (→ React Native) or want one codebase for both platforms (→ Flutter).
  • You're okay with a smaller (but solid) job market in exchange for a focused niche.

Skill roadmap

  1. 1

Fundamentals: Programming basics in your target language (Dart for Flutter; JavaScript/React for React Native; Swift for iOS; Kotlin for Android); Git.

  2. 2

Core skills: UI/widgets/components, layout, navigation, state management, calling APIs, local storage.

  3. 3

Framework: Flutter (+ Firebase) or React Native (+ Expo); or native SwiftUI / Jetpack Compose.

  4. 4

Tools: Firebase (auth, Firestore, push), device APIs, app signing, store deployment (TestFlight/Play Console), basic CI for mobile.

  5. 5

Portfolio projects: Ship 3–4 apps, ideally at least one published to a store.

Recommended courses

Portfolio projects

  1. A multi-screen app with navigation and state (e.g., notes or expense tracker).
  2. An app consuming a public API with offline caching (e.g., weather, news).
  3. A Firebase-backed app with auth and a real-time database (e.g., chat or to-do with sync).
  4. One app polished and published to the App Store or Play Store.

Timeline

6–10 months depending on whether you go cross-platform (faster) or native.
